May we enjoy May? Yes!

If April showers bring May flowers, our area is going to be inundated with roses and daisies. The rainiest April on record must beget the floweriest May on record, if my logic is right.

May is the beginning of the four holiday season: Moms, Dads, Brides and Grads, so it’s time to hit the gift and card shops to get prepared for gift giving. Which Mom/Dad/Bride/Grad wouldn’t love a Pensacola Beach T-shirt for their special occasion?

As the weather warms and hurricane restoration continues, Splash will tell you where to stay, dine, shop, meet and party. We’ve got a complete list of the businesses open on Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach so you can enjoy your trip to the fullest.

This month, you can choose from many entertainment venues. First, take someone out to the ballgame ... where you can take in a fun Pensacola Pelicans game.

You can learn a little about animals and a lot about yourself while riding horseback at a local farm. See our feature on page 10 about how one family discovered the joys of riding.

Like live music? Northwest Florida has some great emerging local talent at many fine watering holes (plus some experienced professionals at the Civic Center and SpringFest). Entertainment writer Nick Rupert chronicles the good and the great in his live music review on page 4.

You can celebrate some obscure Mexican battle on May 5 with a couple of cervezas (beers) and frijoles (beans) to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Any excuse for Mexican food will do!

And if you like golf, play a round at one of the local courses to brush up on your short game. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be good enough for the Blue Angel Classic, which also is held this month.

Before you head out for yard work, read what Santa Rosa Extension Agent Theresa Friday says on page 20 about the secret to a successful lawn. It’s all in the way you mow!

Mark Clabaugh is back with his fishing column, and he’s also got some secrets to catching Red Snapper. Read about his technique and get a wonderful recipe to boot on page 26.

Probably the best thing about May is that it includes a three day weekend where we pay homage to those brave veterans who gave their lives so we can have the freedom to decide which entertainment activity we’ll enjoy.

There’s so much more in this issue of Splash! We thank you for reading, and for making Splash Northwest Florida’s entertainment magazine.
