Local coach leads Pelicans pitchers
The Pelicans tapped Doug Martin to be the Pelicans Pitching Coach for the 2005 season.
During the Pelicans off-season, Martin serves as the Associate Head Coach, recruiting coordinator and pitching coach for the Pensacola Junior College (PJC) Pirates baseball team. In addition, Doug is currently an Associate Scout with the Cincinnati Reds and an instructional staff member with the nationally known Baseball Factory.
The
Baseball Factory is an organization designed to develop players both on the field and in the classroom for the collegiate level.
A 1988 graduate of Tate High School, Martin was an All Northwest Florida selection as a left-handed pitcher before playing for PJC in 1988-89. Later, he was a member of the University of Auburn at Montgomery team from 1991-1993.
"Doug joining our coaching staff brings experience and proven success to our team," said Pelicans General Manager George Stavrenos. "We interviewed several excellent candidates and Doug proved to be the best choice for us. The fact that he resides here and has his roots in Pensacola is an added bonus."
Martin coached at Pensacola High School and Escambia High Schools and served as Associate Scout for the Atlanta Braves.
Home Opener is May 9.
