Arty Gras at the Pensacola Museum of Art

Come start off Mardi Gras weekend at the Pensacola Museum of Art’s (PMA) annual Art After Dark Paint Party on Thursday, February 3 from 6 10 p.m. Art After Dark is a fundraiser that gives you the chance to paint your very own masterpiece on PMA walls.

The theme this year, in honor of the early Mardi Gras season, is Arty Gras! For this event, the Museum staff clears out the upstairs galleries and hangs individual and group blocks of canvas on the walls. When all is said and done, over 150 people can participate and create their very own works of art! Participants are encouraged to bring their own art supplies although a wide selection of paint, brushes and pans will be available. For those who choose to just be critics, the cost is $15.

Tickets may be pre-purchased over the phone with a credit card or bought at the door.

In the spirit of Mardi Gras fun, the PMA has invited all of the Pensacola Mardi Gras Krewes to come out in full costume and paint a canvas, support the Museum and really kick off the Pensacola Mardi Gras parade weekend! Music, food, and drinks will help fill the Museum with an evening of fun.

All proceeds from the event go to benefit Museum programming.

This event is sponsored by West Florida Hospital. Help put the “art” in the party and support the PMA by painting a canvas at the Pensacola Museum of Art’s “Arty Gras” Art After Dark Party on February 3! For more information, please call 850-432-6247.

TAPESTRY THEATRE PRESENTS ‘A RAISIN IN THE SUN’

As part of the University of West Florida Tapestry Theatre Series, the Center for Fine and Performing Arts will present "A Raisin in the Sun," a theatrical production by acclaimed playwright Lorraine Hansberry that tells the story of an African-American family living and struggling on Chicago's South Side in the 1950s. The play will be held Feb. 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 13 and 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the UWF Mainstage Theatre, Bldg. 82. Tickets cost $15 for the general public, $12 for seniors and active military, $8 for non-UWF students and free for UWF students.

When the play opens, the Youngers are about to receive an insurance check for $10,000, which comes from the deceased Mr. Younger's life insurance policy. As the story unravels, a battle that has the potential to shake the foundation of the family structure ensues as each character asserts his or her different idea of how the money should be used to better the family's situation.

Originally produced in 1959, "A Raisin in the Sun" was the first play by an African-American woman to appear on Broadway, and director Lloyd Richards was the first African-American to direct a play on Broadway.

The Tapestry Theatre Series was established last year by the UWF Department of Theatre. The series aims to promote diversity and multicultural perspectives through theater.
