When I saw the trailer for the recent release “In Good Company,” I immediately thought, “Topher Grace as a brilliant protege? No way!”
I could only imagine the young star in his smoke-filled basement from the hit “That 70’s Show.”

Only minutes into the movie, however, I was sold. In fact, I will actually count this movie among my favorites for the year. It was fresh, fun, lively and rather believable. No fairy tale ending, no Hollywood package with loose strings tied up in a pretty little bow of predictability.
The story is built around Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid) who suddenly finds himself on the verge of a major life change: losing his job post corporate take-over, his daughter blooming into a grown woman, his wife (Marg Helgenberger) pregnant, his life out of control.
At the same time that Carter Duryea (Topher Grace) finds himself selected for success in the new company, his wife walks out on him and he falls wildly in love with Foreman’s daughter Alex.
Struggling at first to even tolerate each other, this duo becomes the consummate pals of most buddy movies. Twist in the inevitable discovery of Duryea’s relationship with Alex, and you can imagine the chaos which ensues.
This is a movie with a message, probing Duryea’s quest for a life that counts as he starts his professional life, while it explores Foreman’s life as he nears the end of his career.
