Lunch ‘n’ Learn Fleet hospital official to address group

The University of West Florida Leisure Learning Society will host a Lunch ‘N’ Learn, “Ambassadors for Freedom and Hope: Fleet Hospital 3,” April 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at CJ’s Smokehouse located at 7813 N. Davis Highway. Capt. Pamela Roark, executive officer, Fleet Hospital Pensacola, will be the guest speaker. The presentation is open to the public and the cost is $17.50 per person.

Roark served as the director of nursing for Pensacola’s Fleet Hospital and received operational orders for Fleet Hospital 3 to provide medical support for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003. The hospital became the Navy’s first medical command to establish and construct an expeditionary medical facility in a war zone.

Roark has held numerous prestigious positions including director of nursing for the Naval Hospital, Pensacola, and for Fleet Hospital Pensacola; department head in maternal/child services of Naval Hospital, Pensacola; and senior nurse of the Branch Medical Clinic Directorate.

Roark’s presentation will include experiences of her time in war-stricken Iraq and details of how the personnel of Fleet Hospital 3 cared for more than 500 casualties, including coalition forces, enemy prisoners of war and Iraqi civilians.

Reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. For more information or to make reservations, call Mardi McDaniel-King, UWF Community/University Partnership Office, at (850) 474-3491.
