Gulf Breeze Library offers free Oscar-winning movies

Head over to the Gulf Breeze Library, 1060 Shoreline Dr., for the Monday Night @ the Movies series. This month’s movies are Ray and On the Waterfront.

Ray (2004, PG-13, 153 mins), the biopic about singer Ray Charles, will be shown at 6:30 pm on Monday, April 4. Jamie Fox won a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Charles’ rise from poverty to fame and fortune, overcoming racism, blindness, and drug addiction along the way.

At 6:30 pm on April 25, the library will show On the Waterfront (1954, NR, 108 mins). Directed by Elia Kazan and starring Marlon Brando, On the Waterfront is remembered not only for its plethora of Oscars (it won eight Academy Awards, including best picture, best director and best actor), but also for Brando’s “I coulda been a contender” speech. Brando plays Terry Malloy, a New Jersey longshoreman, who with the help of a priest and a beautiful young woman (Eva Marie Saint in her debut role) stands up to the mobsters who have taken over his union.
