Trumpeter Pays Tribute to Louis Armstrong at Jazz Gumbo Oct. 17

Longineu Parsons will take center stage at Jazz Gumbo Oct. 23.
Jazz Society of Pensacola presents “A Tribute to Louis Armstrong with Trumpeter Longineu Parsons” Monday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. in Phineas Phogg’s Room, Seville Quarter, 130 E. Government St.

The cost is $5 for JSOP members; $7 non-members. Admission includes cup of seafood gumbo.

Trumpeter Longineu Parsons of Tallahassee will perform his Tribute to Louis Armstrong at the Jazz Society’s regular 3rd Monday Jazz Gumbo at 6 p.m. on October 17. Performing with Parsons will be pianist Al Martin, bassist Dr. Bob Andrews and drummer Ted Johnson.

Parsons is Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Florida A&M. He has a bachelor’s degree from that institution, a Master of Music in classical trumpet from the University of Florida and has also studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He coaches the trumpet section of the celebrated Florida A&M Marching 100 Band.

Parsons has performed in over thirty countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa. He has performed for dignitaries such as the Royal Family of Monaco, King of Morocco, the Royal Family of the Netherlands and the President of Austria.

His studio and performance work brought in association with Cab Calloway, Nat Adderley, Nancy Wilson, Herbie Mann, Joe Williams, Sam Rivers, Wycliffe Gordon and many others. He has appeared as guest soloist with “pops” symphony orchestras providing his Louis Armstrong tribute as well as performing his own compositions. He has appeared as guest soloist on the PBS Great Performances special, Three Mo’Tenors.

This past summer, he was featured in musical theater in Hartford, Connecticut in “Ella-Off the Record.”

Parsons has appeared previously at Pensacola JazzFest, performing with guitarist Ted Shumate. He has appeared in several jazz festivals in Florida as well as in Switzerland, France, the JVC Festival in New York City and the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. He performed in Tokyo with Nancy Wilson in 2000.

Although he is not likely to perform on these instruments for the Jazz Society performance, Parsons is also an accomplished instrumentalist on flute, recorder and drums. Parsons will have some of his representative CDs for sale at the Jazz Gumbo.

Monday, Nov. 21—Jazz Gumbo featuring Dixieland Jazz by Joe Occhipinti’s Dixieland Combo

Monday December 5— “Jingle Jazz” annual celebration of the coming Holiday season with jazzy Christmas and holiday tunes. Trumpeter/Vocalist Paul Bruketa lead a group. There will be several musical guests. Admission is free. Donation at the door for the Jazz Society and Pensacola JazzFest is suggested. Time 6 p.m. at Seville Quarter.

The Jazz Society sponsors jazz events throughout the year. It is a founder, along with Arts Council of Northwest Florida and WUWF, of the Pensacola JazzFest and has been presenter of JazzFest since 1999.
