Children awaiting adoption
portraits on exhibit this month

Roger is one of the children available for adoption whos portraits will be displayed in November.
A photo exhibit entitled “The Art of Adoption,” featuring moving portraits of local children waiting for adoptive families, will be on display at the Pensacola Cultural Center from November 17 22.

Free and open to the public, the exhibit also will be included as part of downtown Pensacola’s Gallery Night festivities November 18.

Well-known local photographers Kay Brown, Catherine Gallagher and Warren Thompson donated their services to capture the spirit of some 20 children in Northwest Florida who are hoping to be adopted.

“The Art of Adoption” presentation is affiliated with the National Heart Gallery exhibition opening November 1 in Washington, D.C., in support of National Adoption Awareness Month.

The Heart Gallery was founded by the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department in 2001 as a unique way to help children in foster care who are waiting for adoptive families step from the shadows into the light.

Powerful photographs which reveal the children’s individuality and resilience have touched the hearts of prospective parents and helped many of the children find permanent, loving homes.

Two photos from “The Art of Adoption” — portraits by Gallagher and Thompson — are selected to hang in this year’s national exhibit with photos from Heart Gallery projects from across the country.

Only five portraits were chosen from the entire state of Florida. The national exhibition is being mounted at Union Station and the Russell Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C.

In Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa and Walton counties, some 137 children currently are awaiting adoption.
