Art created by prison inmates will be displayed at Sluggo's
Special Preview Dinner 5-7:30 p.m. Sat. Oct. 14 $20 per person
For the second year in a row, the Subterranean Prison Book Project and Sluggos Restaurant present Inside Art, an exhibit of more than 100 pieces of art created by male and female prisoners.
Inside Art is a collection curated by Carol Strick, who worked for 10 years designing jewelry for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In the 1990s, Strick began corresponding with several prisoners and eventually began collecting and commissioning art work from prisoners throughout the United States. She has traveled with the collection to a
number of U.S. cities, including New Orleans and Tampa.
The Pensacola show will feature paintings, drawings, sculptures and jewelry on display at Sluggos Restaurant, 2403 W. Cervantes St., Brownsville. Recurring themes in the work include the crushing weight of loneliness and isolation, the devastating effects of inequality, and the freeing power of art and creativity.
The exhibit opens to the public with a free wine and hors d'ouerves reception at 8 p.m., Sat., Oct. 14. For details, call (850) 434-3456.
