HOLLYWOOD ... Oscar wasn't the only frolic in Tinseltown. On a Saturday morning, Universal Studios hosted a screening of "Curious George" for the media and their "kiddiebumps" with balloons and popcorn and candy and men in monkey costumes and the film itself based on the H.A. and Margaret Rey books. Inside the theater there was the usual bathroom brigade, squeals and giggles for the film, and much applause when it was over. My two reporters, Jack aged 5 and Brett aged 3, were enthralled with it all. Take your kids; they will be too. Incidentally, George really isn't a monkey. Monkeys have tails. A chimpanzee doesn't. Ergo. George is a chimp. But chimp, or monkey, he's still curious.
The legitimate theater is coming in for its share of excitement in the City of Angels. The Theater Royal Bath came to town with Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest." Famous faces in the audience gave the company a rousing standing ovation when they took their bows. Lynn Redgrave, playing the role of Lady Bracknell, was thrilled with the applause, and at the after-party caught up with all her Los Angeles friends.
BITS 'N' PIECES: James Cromwell's next will be Captain Stacy in "Spider Man 3." Of course, you know who "Spidey" will be. ... Samuel L. Jackson got his hand and footprints in the cement in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. ...
