Mobile Exploreum opens Mummy Exhibit

A spine tingling 3-D experience has amazed thousands worldwide - now the international blockbuster exhibition of Mummy: the inside story opens in Mobile on March 9th for a sixmonth run. The exhibit, collaboration between the Exploreum in Mobile and The British Museum in London, will show through July 31, 2006.

"The Exploreum is the only venue in the Southeast where this show will make a stop," says Executive Director Michael Sullivan. "If you live in this area, you'll want to go ahead and make plans to see this groundbreaking exhibition because the next planned venue for this show is in Asia."

The Exploreum is proud to be one of only two U.S. venues to host this amazing exhibition on its worldwide tour. Mummy completed a successful run in London last summer and opened at the Houston Museum of Natural Science on September 30, 2005. The exhibit will leave Mobile in mid 2006 for stops in several Asian cities in late 2006 and 2007.

Exhibit visitors, wearing special glasses, will enter a 100-seat immersive theater specially-constructed within the exhibit hall, to witness in 3-D clarity the virtual unwrapping of Nesperennub, a 3,000 year old mummy.

"It's incredibly exciting because this is a new kind of museum experience. The Mummy show sheds light on ancient mysteries using modern 3-D technology," explains Sullivan. "If you are a fan of shows like CSI, then you will love this exhibit."

Visitors will travel under the coffin lid, virtually peel away the mummy's wrappings and travel into the body itself. Using data collected by CT scans of Nesperennub's coffin and mummy; visitors become forensic pathologists and discover features of Nesperennub that would otherwise have remained hidden within his unopened coffin. Detailed digital images of his bones and teeth as well as the amulets and other jewelry placed with his mummy, unravel the secrets of his life - his age, his health, his diet and his death. Visitors will even find out about the mysterious object which rests on the top of his Nesperennub's head.

Mummy: the inside story also showcases more than 90 Egyptian funerary objects, including the coffin and mummy of Nesperennub. The artifacts are from The British Museum's outstanding Egyptology collection. Through information panels, the exhibit also tells the story of the life and death of ancient Egyptians and explores the practice of mummification.

A complementary IMAX film, Mystery of the Nile, released in 2004, will run during the Mummy exhibit. The film documents the first descent of all 3,260 miles of the Blue Nile, the word's deadliest river. Visitors will also have the opportunity to take a virtual tour of Nefertari's tomb, considered to be the most beautiful of all Egyptian burial sites. Plus, the Ciba Lab is outfitted with numerous tabletop demonstrations featuring Egyptian themes from hieroglyphs to mummification. In addition, a custom gift shop, dedicated to Egyptology items and featuring many from The British Museum, will be included in the exhibit gallery area.
