Local artist's watercolor collection displayed at Destin History and Fishing Museum
Destin community's local museum recently received a collection of watercolor paintings by John F. Main, an Alabama native and Destin retiree. The paintings, courtesy of Mrs. Betty Main, are currently on display as part of the museum's permanent exhibit collection.
The artist's renderings captured scenes of Destin, particularly its boats, harbors, and bayous, from 1969 to 1985. Main, now deceased, began painting in 1968 after receiving a small box of Binney & Smith Water Colors as a Christmas stocking gift. His style evolved through the years as did his varied subject matter, which included land and seascapes of Destin. The Destin paintings capture familiar landscapes and old fishing vessels such as Capt. Dave II, Miss Alma, Gulf Queen, Miss Cleo, and others from local waters.
Other Main works include paintings called "Down Home Memories," a collection of warm, small-town Alabama scenes. These are featured on note cards now available for sale at the museum.
Destin History and Fishing Museum Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the heritage of Destin's first settlers and the historic harbor district.
The display can be viewed Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 108 Stahlman Ave.
