Enjoy 'Da' Gullah Experience' at UWF Gallery 88
Sonja Griffin Evans is a selftaught artist, born and raised in the Low Country of Beaufort, South Carolina and currently residing in Pensacola.Evans is relatively new to the Gullah visual arts community. She has always admired the arts, but only recently began painting as t h e r a p y .
It is sometimes hard to reconcile her relative inexperience with the quality and quantity of her vibrant acrylic paintings, many of which reflect her family's Gullah heritage. Gullah is a language and culture which evolved from the thousands of enslaved Africans who were brought to the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia in the 1 8 0 0 ' s .
Da' Gullah Experience will be on display through June 16 at WUWF's Gallery 88 on campus. Regular gallery viewing hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
