Nobody knows what Nick Nolte is up to

HOLLYWOOD ... No one, but no one can figure out Nick Nolte's next move. And that's been going on for a long time. Back when I was president of t h e Hollywood Wo m e n' s Press Club, Nolte was voted New Star of the Year. At a huge affair with everyone dressed to the nines, Mr. Nolte appeared in his pajamas. Today it's the same. His most recent appearance was most conventional - suit and shirt BUT with a big mustache and long, bushy beard. Count on his conversation also to be wacky. However, his is a great acting talent, so usually all eccentricities are forgiven. As to his personal life, that's about it ... personal. No one seems to know too much about that.

Who hasn't read "The DaVinci Code"? Everyone I know has, and I've perused the tome three times. Of course you know the film version, starring Tom Hanks, is causing no little controversy. The Catholic Church has banned the film, which is making megabucks at the box office. To my knowledge, no other film has ever caused more conversation and controversy. That's all from me. If you care, go see it for yourself.

Aside to Jacqueline K. of Amite, La.: Yes. Your facts are authentic. Charlize Theron hails from Benoni, South Africa. And yes, her mother shot and killed her father. It was termed self-defense, and she was acquitted. As to whether Charlize witnessed the tragedy, I do not know the answer. Although I suspect whether she did, or didn't, it must have left its mark in some way.

Lindsay Lohan is stealing the spotlight from Paris Hilton. She's seen more around town, cavorting in her car or on foot, creating a bit of chaos wherever she goes. And she's starring in "Just My Luck" on the big screen. At the preem screening and after-party she was very much in evidence, decked out in a white frock exposing just enough of her "endowments." The film, incidentally, was shot in the Big Easy and wound up just before Katrina hit the city.

Aside to Louise K. of Richmond, Va. Yes. Anne Heche is still "in the biz," despite the fact that she's now a married mom. Matter of fact, she's set to star in a drama for the tube titled "Men in Trees," about a woman who relocates to Alaska after having marriage trouble. That's about all I can tell you about her for now. As to her present relationship with Ellen, I think it's still amicable.

BITS 'N' PIECES: Gathering Place Films, a newly formed company, is after Christopher Plummer to star in a sci-fifeature, "Stones' Quest: In Search of Its Masters." ... Eva Longoria was a big hit when she hosted the Alma Awards. By actual count, she changed costumes six times during the show. Her quip, "I'm the first Latina to have a white gardener," whooped the house.

And just in case you didn't know, the Almas are given to Latinos for their "accomplishments in entertainment."
