July with latin rhythms, jazz session
Free concerts at Destin Commons begin July 1, 2

Destin Commons Center Plaza will host two free concerts July 1 and 2. Stephanie Pettis & Rio will share their up-beat Latin rhythms from 6 9 p.m. July 1. The 6 piece band will go heavy on the percussion with conga, bongo, tymbals and cabasa sounds. Stephanie will wow the audience with the melodies of her flute, along with well known keyboardist from Atlanta, Gene Howell's unique montuno style of piano playing which is Cuban in its origin. Lawn chairs and blankets welcome.

Saxophonist Michael J. Thomas starts the fun at noon on Saturday in the Plaza. Michael J. Thomas is a contemporary Smooth Jazz/Christian Saxophonist living and pursuing his dream of performing his music and ministering through the use of his God-given talent. He has finished the recording of his new album, Hymns, Music For The Soul and will be performing these songs live at Destin Commons along with some popular smooth jazz tunes. The king of live performances, Michael Bubl is set to perform at The Pensacola Civic Center on Saturday, July 8th at 8 p.m. With two platinum albums under his belt and sell-out crowds around the world screaming for more, the lovable young crooner with the dark velvet voice has reignited a new generation's passion for popular standards.

Bubl’s latest release, "It's Time" features a collaboration with Stevie Wonder and the smash-hit single "Home".

Join Jazz Society of Pensacola's party and Jam Session July 9

Head to Apple Annie's, Seville Quarter on Sunday, July 9 at 3:00 p.m. to honor Norm Vickers, retiring Volunteer Executive

Director of Jazz Society of

Pensacola.

The event is free,

and music will be

provided by Joe

Occhipinti's Big Band.

Connie Jones,

trumpeter from New

Orleans, will be the featured musician, accompanied by a sextet of local musicians.

Early in his career Connie played with Jack Teagarden, and for seven years was lead trumpet with Pete Fountain's Jazz Band in New Orleans followed by work with the Dukes of Dixieland. Currently Connie is working aboard the American Queen steamboat on the Mississippi .

Following the concert an open jam session will continue. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments.

Singin' in the Rain' at PJC July 28

Come enjoy the funny, nostalgic musical "Singin' in the Rain" * the grand finale of the 2006 Lyceum program at Pensacola Junior College.

The musical is a PJC Summer High School Onstage Workshop production that runs 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays, July 28-30 and Aug. 4-6, at the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium, Building 8, Pensacola campus, 1000 College Blvd.

Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at the Lyceum box office in the

Ashmore Auditorium. VISA, MasterCard, cash or check accepted. Reservations by phone are charged to a credit card at the time of order.

The story line: It's 1927 and Don Lockwood and Lina

Lamont are the darlings of the silent silver screen. Offscreen, Don, aided by his happy-golucky friend and piano accompanist, Cosmo Brown, has to dodge Lina's romantic overtures, especially when he falls for chorus girl Kathy Selden. With the advent of sound in motion pictures, it is decided to turn Don and Lina's new film into a "talkie"

and a musical at that. The

only problem is Lina's voice, which mere words cannot describe. Thus, Kathy is brought on to dub her speaking and singing voice in secret, and Don's on top of the world. But then Lina finds out...
