Visual Arts Gallery at Anna Lamar Switzer Center feature photographer and sculptor

The Visual Arts Gallery at the Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts, Pensacola Junior College, is kicking off its 2006- 2007 Lyceum Exhibition lineup with Pinky Bass and Jan Black.

The exhibit runs Sept. 11 through Oct. 23. The opening reception is 6 to 8p.m. Sept. 21.

Bass' pinhole photography is featured in the collections of the Polaroid Corp., Philadelphia Museum of Art, High Museum of Art and the Birmingham Museum of Art. The haunting black-and-white photographs are the result of years working with artist-made pinhole cameras. Bass created the portraits on display during an extended stay in Mexico as an artist-inresidence.

She has worked as an artist-ineducation, traveling extensively in search of images and presenting workshops. She currently calls Fairhope, Ala., home.

Black's walnut-carved sculptures are interpretive portraits of family and friends. The realistic, life-size hands are painstakingly detailed and beautifully rendered. Several works present subtle nuances of hands slowly morphing into another object, such as a fish. Other works interpret the occupation of the individual. Black paints the sculptures, adding another layer of realism/surrealism to the work. She has taught drawing, sculpture and art history at the National Art School, Sydney, Australia and Prahran College of Advanced Education in Melbourne, Australia. Black shows her work regionally and lives in Elberta, Ala.

The Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts anchors the PJC campus at Ninth Avenue and Airport Boulevard. For more information, call 484-2550.
