Johansson steals show in Venice

HOLLYWOOD ... Scarlett Johansson stole the show at the opening of the Venice Film Festival. The star of the "The Black Dahlia" wore a long, vintage gown, with a satiny look in pale yellow. Her hair long, straight and parted on the side was topped off by a small jeweled butterfly near her forehead. The "Black Dahlia" was screened for a most appreciative audience, and then there was an after preem party held on the beach with director Brian De Palma, co-star Josh Hartnett and all the other members of the cast and crew joining in the fun.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to star in a Hitchcockian thriller titled "Addicted," and that's all we know about it. The plot is being kept under wraps with production under way in a couple of days. However, we do know that in her younger days Sarah was a competing ice-figure skater and has a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do. She has five holes in each earlobe and one for a naval ring, and tattooed on her lower back is the Chinese character for "integrity."

I was never a Katie Couric fan when she was on the "Today" show. All those teeth and gums and the cutes. BUT I must admit she has risen to the role of anchor on CBS news. Just a small smile. No big show of teeth and gums. Heavy eye make-up to draw attention away from the mouth, and an excellent and just right hairdo. Add to that a knowledgeable delivery, which all adds up to the fact she's making it in what was formerly "a man's world." Belated congratulations, Katie.

Happily, we'll be seeing Cameron Diaz and Jim Carrey teamed again in "A Little Game Without Consequence" for Focus Features. This about a couple happily married five years who decide to play a trick on their friends by announcing a breakup, only to discover the friends thought they never should have been together in the first place. Sounds like an inane sort of a plot to me, but possibly these two can make something out of it; they did in past pics like "The Mask."

This year it will be Steven Spielberg, Dolly Parton, Smokey Robinson, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Zubin Mehta honored by the K e n n e d y Center, the event to take place on Dec. 3 to air at a later date on CBS. For my money, this is always one of the best shows to hit the airwaves.

BITS 'N' PIECES: Seems like everybody's getting a girl these days. Brad and Angelina had a girl; Tom and Katie had a girl; Brooke Shields had a girl; and now we're told Britney's next will be a girl. ... It's Paris again. This time she was cited for driving erratically on Sunset Boulevard in the wee hours. ... And now I know why I see so much of the

way-out" blond heiress. Miss Hilton lives in the hills just above my "digs" and is always creating some kind of uproar in the area. ... Ellen DeGeneres will emcee the Oscar Show in '07. She's the BEST! ... Matthew McConaughy slowly edging out Leo DiCaprio with his number of appearances at hot nightspots surrounded by beauteous femmes. ... Sly Stallone and Sharon Stone teed up in the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Golf Tourney. ... And did you know that James Earl Jones was a stutterer and a stammerer when he was young? He worked and worked at it until he overcame the difficulties, and today has fame and fortune from his speaking voice and his delivery.
