Oscar winner Loren hails from Rome
by Evelyn Green
Q: I've always wondered about Sophia Loren. Would you give me information about her private life and family? -- Frank P., via e-mail

A: Sophia Loren was born "Sofia Scicolone" on Sept. 20, 1934 in Rome, Italy. She eventually changed the spelling of her first name to "Sophia" and experimented with different last names before settling on "Loren." After winning a beauty contest at 14, enrolling in acting classes and winning another contest where the prize was a screen test, the rest, as they say, is history. She married film producer Carlo Ponti, and together they have two sons, Carlo Jr. and Eduardo. Loren has 100 films to her credit. She received an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 1990, and in 1999 People magazine called her "one of the world's most stunning and ageresistant women." A bit of trivia: Her sister, Anna Maria Scicolone, was formerly married to Romano Mussolini, a son of fascist Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

Q: I have been watching reruns of "The Cosby Show." Can you tell me what the actor who played Theo is doing now? -- E.F.S., Decatur, Ala.

A: Malcolm-Jamal Warner played Bill Cosby's only son on the longrunning hit show of the 1980s and early '90s. Since "Cosby," Malcolm has been seen on "Malcolm & Eddie," "Sliders," "Touched by an Angel" and was the host of 2002's "Lyric Cafe" with Gary Dourdan of "CSI." He also starred alongside Jason Alexander in the doomed 2005 sitcom "Listen Up!" Warner is a regular participant in live poetry readings and currently fronts a jazz/funk band called Miles Long.

Q: In a July episode of "Good Eats With Alton Brown" the subject was barley, and they were grinding their own grain. Some scenes took place at a beautiful inn. Where did they film that episode? -- A Reader, via email

A: I am assuming you're talking about the scene where they were at the Sylvan Falls Mill Bed & Breakfast, which is located in the beautiful northeast Georgia mountains. Have a question for Cindy? E-mail her at letters.kfws@hearstsc.com, or write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475.
