Sorvino speaks Chinese Mandarin
HOLLYWOOD... Mira Sorvino is set to co-star with Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Ruffalo in "Reservation Road." It's a drama about two families colliding when the father of one kills the son of another in a hit-and-run. Sorvino plays one of the wives. Mira won an Oscar for her performance in "Mighty Aphrodite." In private life, she is quite a brain: a Harvard graduate majoring in East Asian Studies who speaks fluent Chinese Mandarin.
Very interesting indeed! Ellen and Oprah now compete with each other on the tube in the L.A. area. Oprah purchased a $50 million estate in Montecito, Calif. That's a suburb of the fashionable Santa Barbara area on the ocean, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles. When not in Chicago, Oprah spends most of her time in Montecito. N O W , Ellen has purchased a home in Montecito for $16 m i l l i o n . T h i s "weekend ge t away " f e a t u r e s four bedrooms and eight bathrooms! There is also a guesthouse, swimming pool, tennis court and mountain-toocean views. The master suite has four rooms, including a nursery, which makes one wonder if Ellen and Portia plan to adopt or find other ways to have a child? And imagine the excitement among the natives, who just might see Ellen and Oprah grocery shopping or anywhere else in the area.

| Looks like Ashton Kutcher is fast becoming as big a star as wife Demi. At the moment he has two hits on the big screen. One is the animated "Open Season," the other "The Guardian." Both are pulling in big bucks at the box office. His private life goes well, with Demi's girls loving him, and he stays chummy with Bruce Willis. However, 'tis bruited about that every now and then when Demi and ex-Prez William Jefferson Clinton meet up, the conversation is animated, but very much under Ashton's watchful eye.
Where have I been? I didn't know till several weeks ago that Tori Spelling is "expecting." And, as usual, her "enceinte" wardrobe is very, very chic. And wouldn't father Aaron have adored having a grandbaby! Too bad he won't be around to enjoy. ... AND to Keith K. of Baton Rouge, La.: Yes, Tori has a brother. His name is Randy, and if I'm correct he's an aspiring actor. And no, I do not know why Daddy didn't also create a series for him. What I do know is that Aaron was a lovely, caring and talented man who never forgot a friend.
"Gorgeous" George Clooney is reaping all kinds of awards. This always makes me happy, because not only is he handsome and talented, he's a thoroughly NICE person. And at the risk of being redundant, I have to repeat the story about sitting with him at a Hollywood Women's Press Club award luncheon before he became famous. He was then just another "ER" actor, and I heard him whisper to his date, "I think she's going to put our names in her column." Have I EVER!
A tip of the hat to Johnny Depp, who spends a lot of time with kids and donates a lot of money to the L.A. Children's Hospital. He recently received the "Courage to Care Award" presented by J.Lo at the Noche De Ninos Gala benefiting the hospital. THEN, at that same event, Billy Crystal auctioned his valet parking ticket for $50,000! This, of course, also going to the hospital coffers.

A BIT 'N' A PIECE: Lindsay's been quiet; Paris likewise. ... Britney and Kevin are still offy-onny. ... And the rest of the usual suspects are busy mending their fences.
