October brings national acts and bigger events to area

Newsboys hit civic center Oct. 12

Christian rock's hottest band, Newsboys, are revisiting the Pensacola area on Oct. 12 with their nationwide "Go" tour. The boys are promoting their 14th record, "Go" which which spawned the Billboard Top 200 single "Wherever We Go".

With five gold albums, six million CD's sold, and more than 20 number one radio hits, the band's performances are the biggest ticket in christian music. Joining the "Go" tour are Kutless and Newworldson.

Ticket prices are $40, $33 and $28. Additional fees may apply. Tickets are available at The Pensacola Civic Center Box Office and Ticketmaster outlets.

Ba'nana Republic members form Signal-Seven

Members of the locally prominant Ba'nana Republic are forming a new band called Signal-Seven. Unlike their other project that focuses mainly on cover songs, the members of the new group will focus primarily on original songs. The group, including Jerry Dawson, Jonathan Grooms and Doug Stiers, is preparing to release a new album. Samples of their new material can be heard at www.myspace.com/signalsev enband.

Guest performances on the album include Damon Johnson, singer and guitarist from the band Brother Kane, and Jacob Lynam from the Birmingham, Ala.-based band Lynam.

REO Speedwagon, Styx in Pensacola Oct. 20

The boys of REO Speedwagon and Styx are ready to roll into Pensacola full throttle on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Pensacola Civic Center. The latest chapter of REO history began in the spring of 2000 when the band joined forces with fellow Midwest rockers, Styx, for a sold-out, nationwide, coheadline tour.

Over the following two years, REO Speedwagon toured nonstop, playing all the usual concert stops, but also getting back to the band's roots in small town America. These are the people who sing along every night to the songs they have written, such as the number one hits: "Can't Fight This Feeling" and "Keep On Loving You."

Pensacola Fair showcases national and local talent

The Pensacola Interstate Fair, taking place Oct. 18 through Oct. 28 at 6655 Mobile Highway in Pensacola, will feature a multitude of live acts to please the masses.

Phil Vassar will hit the stage Friday, Oct. 19, and lead-singer Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe will get crowds rocking on Friday, Oct. 26. Craig Morgan makes a stop at the Pensacola Interstate Fair on Saturday, Oct. 20. Paris Bennett will turn heads with her stunning vocal range on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Combining the talents of musical celebrity Jeff Cook from Alabama and the new adrenalin of Mitch Glenn, the Cook & Glenn duo is on the road to making great music and will perform at the fair on Oct. 25. As a Semifinalist from the fifth season of American Idol, fifth American Idol show, Kellie Pickler will charm Pensacola Interstate Fair audiences on Saturday, Oct. 27 with her vibrant vocals, boundless energy and bubbly personality.

New this year is the Midway Stage where local bands, dance groups, musicians, magicians, singers and other talented Pensacolians have a chance to show their skills on stage during the 11-day fair. Details: email stageacts07@earthlink.net.

Pensacola Civic Band Oct. 25

The Pensacola Civic Band cordially invites residents to "A Concert of Sacred Music featuring Canticle." Performance dates will be Thursday, Oct. 25 at St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze and Oct. 30 at Marcus Pointe Baptist Church in Pensacola.

Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and will feature the soothing sounds of Canticle. Canticle is a volunteer organization comprised of classical musicians that wish to use their gifts and talents to reach out to the community. Instruments they use include harp, handbells, various woodwinds and strings, voice, and piano.

This concert will feature Canticle's handbell choir. Come enjoy David Gillingham's stirring rendition of "No Shadow of Turning," Claude T. Smith's reverberating "God of Our Fathers," and "Let There Be Peace," a composition by Jill Jackson and Seymour Miller in honor of the lives lost to terrorism on Sept.-11, 2001.

Evanescence plays at The Wharf

Multi-platinum selling band Evanescence will perform at The Wharf in Orange Beach, Ala. on Oct. 27.

Continuing the multiplatinum success of their sophomore album, The Open Door, Evanescence welcomes drummer Will Hunt and guitarist Troy Mc- Lawhorn - both from Dark New Day - to the band in May.
