Charity costume hip hop party at OTC June 22
By Franklin Hayes Special to Splash!

Clockwise from above: Game Plan, Sayjack and MC3D (bottom left) form the group What We Do Productions Crew.
Yes, there is a difference between rap and hip-hop.

Just let an evening with the What We Do Productions Crew break it all down for you.

The Crew, along with Inferno, DJ's Sleazy Steve and Dunn-D, will perform an exposition of their own definition of Panhandlegrown hip-hop on June 22 at Olde Town Cavern (OTC) in Pensacola.

Game Plan, who describes his verbose art with the active verb "MC-ing," infuses healthy doses of philosophy and political thinking into his songs, cramming tracks with intellectual thought as opposed to meaningless fodder.

"Rap is more commercialized, where as MC-ing is more personalized," Game Plan said. "Hip hop is the mother of rap. A lot of people think it's the other way around. Rap is more about commercialism and entertainment whereas MC-ing, while it has those elements, is also blended with the components of poetry and listener interaction."

Game Plan claims acts such as Bad Religion, Gutter Mouth, De La Soul and Sly Boogie as influences and performs with MC's Inferno, Sayjack and MC3D under the moniker What We Do Productions Crew.

The Crew's East Coast sound contrasts with the more verbally trite and locally prominent Dirty South genre and compliments the group's diverse background.

"My music is about ruffling feathers and making people think about their current state as well as that of their family, city, country, and world all together," says Game Plan, who has hailed from a multitude of locals, including: Japan, England, San Diego, Iowa, Maryland and finally Pensacola.

The June 22 show at OTC, located near downtown Pensacola at 710 N Palafox, is a costume party and charity event with 60 percent of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Admission is $10 and doors are open to patrons 21 and up. The Crew also hope to schedule a fall performance somewhere in the Northwest Florida region.
