Bam! Emeril Lagasse's career really cookin' in New Orleans
Emeril Lagasse has certainly come a long, long way since my friend Ella Brennan hired him as a chef for her Commander's Palace Restaurant in New Orleans. Now he owns several restaurants in The Big Easy, has his own show on the Cooking Channel, AND is scheduled to act as grand marshal in the Tournament of Roses Parade come New Year's Day 2008! Wouldn't it be fun if he tossed crawfish to the crowds?
Aside to Anita K. of Encino, Calif. Yup. Years ago it was an entirely different Ellen Barkin. Good actress, but not too glamorous. Now, costarring in "Ocean's Thirteen," she's making the talk-show rounds, and on David Letterman's "Late Show" she looked absolutely luscious. I do believe the answer is that since those beginning days she married a billionaire, and I would surmise there was almost a complete makeover. However, and whatever, she's looking gorgeous. P.S. Barkin has always been an excellent actress.
Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast of "The Spirit," about an ambitious young cop murdered in the line of duty who, under mysterious circumstances, is reborn as the masked mystery man known as The Spirit. Jackson will play the Octopus, the Spirit's nemesis, a meek lab assistant who reinvents himself as a psychotic nightmare and who kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face. This is all based on comic-book characters.

| HOLLYWOOD IS READING: "Hollywood Girls Club" by Maggie Marr (Crown). About four friends, all at the top of their game, who fight to make the film "Seven Minutes Past Midnight" a box-office smash. Fun, fun, fun. ... "How to Get on Reality TV" by Matthew Robinson (Random House Reference). Everything you would ever want to know about getting on one of those reality shows. ... "Ghost Hunter's Guide to Los Angeles" (Pelican Publishing Co.) by Jeff Dwyer. Dwyer tells about the places one might spot a ghost in the city of "Glamour and Glitter."
It was quite a gathering at the L.A. Museum of Tolerance when Angelina Jolie appeared at a benefit screening of her latest movie, "A Mighty Heart." The film is based on the book of the same name about murdered journalist Daniel Pearl, and was written by his wife, Mariane, who was also there. So was Pearl's mother. The event raised around $15,000 for a program promising "cross-cultural understanding through journalism and music programs." P.S. Angelina is still exotically beautiful, but far too thin. Her arms and legs look like sticks.
Governor Arnie came down from Sacramento to participate in the 2007 World Stunt Awards gala held on the Paramount Studios lot. Much partying and huggin' and greetings, and then he presented Burt Reynolds with a Lifetime Achievement Award for "An Action Motion Picture Star." Burt definitely has had a few nips and tucks and looks great. He's sporting a mustache, and always the ever-present aviator glasses.

BITS 'N' PIEcES: Despite a stroke leaving him with a speech impediment, Kirk Douglas still makes the rounds of award shows and parties. His sense of humor has never left him. ... Al Pacino is a most unemotional guy, but he almost broke down when he received the AFILife Achievement Award. ... AND one of the big games in Tinseltown at the moment is, "Who has had a boob job?"
