Have an old-fashioned Christmas at Camp Walton Schoolhouse
National Seashore Celebrates Live Oaks Dec. 9

Fort Walton Beach - The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center will hold its annual Christmas Open House at the Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum and the Garnier Post Office Museum this year on December 1st from Noon to 3:00 p.m. The event is free to the public and will include musical entertainment, children's games and crafts, home-baked goodies, local history, and letters to Santa. Both historic sites will be decorated for an oldfashioned celebration as visitors enjoy the activities and free refreshments for the day.

Visitors are encouraged to join the museum staff and Friends of the Museums in the open house celebration before Santa arrives across the street at the Fort Walton Landing at 3:30.

Heritage Park & Cultural Center is located at 139 Miracle Strip Parkway SE. For further information please contact Museum Director Laura Bessinger- Morse at 833-9595.

The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center is a community outreach division of the City and is committed to providing area historical educational programming.

The National Seashore will host a Live Oak Celebration at Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m.

"With low sprawling branches dripping with Spanish moss and gnarled trunk, often over 10 feet across, live oak trees are a well recognized icon of the south," stated Superintendent Jerry Eubanks. "However, many people are unaware of the critical role these majestic trees played in the construction of our country's first navy."

The celebration will feature a natural history presentation "Majestic Live Oaks" by Pat Ann from the Santa Rosa County Extension Office at 1 p.m. and a historic perspective will be explored in "Trees for Defense" by Park Ranger Edison Woods at 2 p.m. In addition, light refreshments will be served and free live oak seedlings will be offered while supplies last.

Superintendent Jerry Eubanks encourages everyone to enjoy the National Seashore and join us for our ranger-led programs. For a complete program schedule and more information, call 934-2600 or visit the website at www.nps.gov/guis.
