Choctawhatchee Christmas bird count is Dec. 17

The Choctawhatchee Audubon Society will conduct the annual Choctawhatchee Bay Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on Monday, Dec.17.

Volunteers are needed to assist experienced leaders as recorders or spotters; no experience necessary. This is the 108th annual winter count since ornithologist Frank Chapman, in 1900, proposed that counting birds should replace the custom of shooting birds during the holidays. Today, over 55,000 volunteers from all 50 states, every Canadian province, parts of Central and South America, Bermuda, the West Indies, and Pacific Islands, count and record every individual bird and bird species seen in a specified area. Compilers enter their count data into a massive database that can be accessed by species or location. See www.audubon.org/bird/cbc. The primary objective of the CBC is to monitor the status and distribution of bird populations which is vital for conservation efforts. To help in the Count or for more information, contact Donald Ware at 862-6582 or donware@embarqmail.com.
