Writers strike also affecting actors

Q: I am worried about how the writers strike might affect my favorite show, "Medium." Will Patricia Arquette and the rest of the gang be back? If so, is she excited about the new season, and what do they have in store for us?

- Mary Anne, via e-mail

A: I posed this question to Patricia, and this was her response: "All I can say is that we have nine new episodes to air Mondays at 10 p.m. beginning Jan. 7. Angelica Huston will be appearing in six of them, and it was really thrilling to work with her. She is an amazing actress, and it was a really great experience to have her on set.

"Because of the writers strike, we really don't know when we will be going back to work. And funny enough, the Dubois family is finding themselves in a similar situation. Having said that, our writers were up to their old tricks providing us with a lot of really interesting twists this season. I definitely think our audiences will not be disappointed."

Q: I really like Russell Crowe as an actor, and I was happy to see him settle down with his wife and son. I thought his work in "3:10 to Yuma" was some of his best, and I can't wait to see him some more. What other roles does he have up his sleeve?

- A Reader, via e-mail

A: You might remember that a few months ago I wrote that "Fight Club" co-stars Brad Pitt and Edward Norton would be on the big screen together again in the political thriller "State of Play." Since that writing, Brad has dropped out because of script differences. Because of the writer's strike - it is against the Writers' Guild rules to do any kind of writing, including rewrites - Brad was forced to drop out, as filming was set to begin immediately. Russell Crowe has stepped in to replace him.

Q: I enjoy watching reruns of older television shows, one of my favorite being "The Nanny." It got me to thinking: What is Charles Shaughnessy doing these days. He's a fine actor and quite handsome.

- Gloria D., Eau Claire, Wisc.

A: I spoke with Charles in spring 2007 when he was working on the telenovella called "Saints & Sinners" that ran on MyNetworkTV. He was having a blast playing the patriarch of a wealthly, influential family, with storyline undertones loosely based on "Romeo and Juliet." As he told me a few months back: "When you're working on something that's well-written, with good directors and actors, there's nothing else like it."

And it seems he has found it. If you live in the Los Angeles area, you can catch him from Jan. 11 to Feb. 17 at the Pasadena Playhouse in the play "Orson's Shadow," playing the part of Laurence Olivier.
