Gulf Breeze High performs 'Steel Pier' at UWF on Feb. 15

The Gulf Breeze High School Drama Club will perform the musical "Steel Pier" at the University of West Florida Center for Performing Arts, located in building 82 on the UWF campus on February 15 & 16. Showtime for both nights is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through the UWF box office by calling (850) 857-6285 or going online to www.uwf.edu/theatre/boxoffice . Tickets may also be purchased at the front office of Gulf Breeze High School located at 675 Gulf Breeze Parkway, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Set in the honky-tonk world of marathon dancing during the Great Depression in the 1930s, "Steel Pier" brings together an assortment of people eager to dance their way into fame and prizes. They gather on the famous Steel Pier in Atlantic City, where the stage throbs with the dancing rhythms of the era as the night wears away. "Steel Pier" achieves a unity of song and dance rarely seen in today's Broadway musicals, offering audiences a toetapping trip back to the days of The Suzy-Q, the Turkey Trot, the Shag and the Moochi, but set to a distinctive Kander & Ebb score.

The lead role of "Once upon a time celebrity, now marathon dancer" Rita Racine is played by Kate Turner. Kate was seen last year as Millie, in the GBHS musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and is a recipient of this year's "Ashley Brown Alumni Scholarship" from the Pensacola Children's Chorus. Starring opposite Kate is Brandon Timmons as Bill, the daredevil stunt pilot looking for a second chance with our star. Brandon played Jimmy in last year's production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and was awarded "best actor" in the recent District One Thespian competition.

The stage stays full with a large cast of nostalgic characters and dancers, making "Steel Pier" a must-see if you enjoy the lively music and dancing from the 1930's. "Steel Pier" was written by David Thompson, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb. This musical is presented with special arrangements by Music Theatre International and is directed by Gulf Breeze High School drama instructor Margie Timmons. Timmons has been teaching and directing plays at GBHS for more than 25 years. For more information, or to set up interviews with the cast of "Steel Pier" please contact Heidi Amberson.
