 | | Visitors can view artifacts, such as the Native American pottery above, free of charge at the Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center's Archeaology and Heritage Day. |
| The Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center will host its 15th Annual Archaeology and Heritage Day Open House on Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Heritage Park, located at 139 Miracle Strip Parkway, consists of the Indian Temple Mound Museum, the Camp Walton Schoolhouse and the Garnier Post Office Museum. All three museums will be open with free admission.
Visitors may tour the museum's exhibits, visit hands-on areas and shop the Museum Store for a large selection of Native American and history related items such as books, jewelry, music, old fashioned toys and educational materials.
Archaeology and Heritage Day Open House is a family event which offers cultural arts and educational activities. Area museums and historic organizations display local history information while artists demonstrate historic crafts and primitive skills such as beadwork, basketmaking, flintknapping, pottery making and wood hewing.
Demonstrators, artists and vendors welcome questions and many have unique items for sale. Featured guests this year are archaeologists, Native Americans and the Walton Guard. Children enjoy the hands-on area, where they make a take home project. Entertainment is scheduled throughout the day at all three museums. Be sure and try the authentic Native American stew available from the Muscogee Nation of Florida.
With this event our local community takes part in the statewide celebrations of Florida Archaeology Month throughout March and Florida Heritage Month, March 15 to April 15.
Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate our fascinating local heritage. For questions or information please call Gail or Mike at (850) 833-9595.
The event is sponsored by The City of Fort Walton Beach and The Friends of the Museums, Inc.
