Local artists display their work with 'Mature Wit and Form'
If you're looking for inspiration to pick up the brush again, three artists in their late 70s prove creativity is not a river that eventually runs dry, but a spring that continues to produce fresh new works. On March 19, painters Ruth Davis, Hazel Shiell and Roscoe E. Wallace will celebrate the theme of their show titled "Mature Wit and Form."
A reception will be held March 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Quayside Art Gallery in Pensacola, located at 17 E. Zaragossa.
Ruth Davis, 77, has been painting for the past 20 years. A graduate of Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind., Davis has no formal academic art training but has studied art in workshops with several talented artists known both nationally and locally. Her art education has been reinforced over the years as she has traveled and lived throughout the country. During those years, she was a member of the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Association in Birmingham, Mich. and the Northern Kentucky Arts Council.
Davis, whose works are displayed throughout the year at Quayside Art Gallery, is a member of Pensacola Artists, Inc., Gulf Breeze Arts and the Art Study Club in Pensacola.

| Hazel Shiell, 78, considers herself a lifelong student of art and life. Following retirement from a career in the public school system, she pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at PJC and UWF, which she completed in 1999.
Her work is a reflection of a life at water's edge of Pensacola Bay and her passion for the human form and everything Florida. Originally a watercolorist who now mostly works in acrylics, she portrays people, places and landscapes in visually exciting moments, ranging from tight representation to subtle abstraction to the truly nonobjective.
Roscoe E. Wallace, 77, of Shalimar, was inspired to do something productive by his wife, who asked him to do something useful other than sleep in front of the TV. That was 1964.
Since then, he has won more than 20 awards in shows in Florida, Alabama, Georgia and New York. Wallace studied at the Dayton Art Institute in Dayton, Ohio. He is a member of Quayside Art Gallery and Pensacola Artists, Inc.
He also has studied with several nationally known artists. His work ranges from representational to abstract, depending on the subject. Wallace prefers working in acrylics. Wallace enjoys teaching classes and workshops in acrylic painting.
