Guarding the beach, in style Lifeguards protecting swimmers along Pensacola Beach are using four new lifeguard stands on Casino Beach, three on the east side of the pier and one on the west. The new towers are two-man, Californiastyle stands constructed from fiberglass and stainless steel and stand six feet high. Fiberglass foldable awnings drop down to secure the towers. A new feature, an extended ramp from the towers to the sand, allows lifeguards to run instead of having to jump from their post to the sand. Funding for the construction of two of the new lifeguard towers came from bed tax on hotels on Pensacola Beach. Two additional are funded by Santa Rosa Island Authority fees.
"This is a quantum leap from the wooden towers that we previously had," said Bob West, SRIA Director of Public Safety.
