Memorial day
a day of remembrance

Memorial Day means boating, cookouts and the official start of summer vacation.

But there is a deeper meaning, and many fail to recognize that Memorial Day is a day set aside to remember those service men and women who paid the ultimate price for freedom.

Below are a few suggestions on celebrating Memorial Day the way it was intended: by visiting the Barrancas National Cemetery and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.

by visiting memorials. by flying the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon. by flying the 'POW/MIA Flag' as well (Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act).

by participating in a "National Moment of Remembrance": at 3 p.m. to pause and think upon the true meaning of the day, and for Taps to be played.

By renewing a pledge to aid the widows, widowers, and orphans of our fallen dead, and to aid the disabled veterans.

By visiting the National Museum of Naval Aviation

By visiting the Air Force Armament Museum in Fort Walton Beach By visiting a nursing home or assisted living facility By checking on a veteran who lives alone By thanking a veteran in person
