Florida often entices thoughts of sunshine and beaches for many potential visitors. However, Jackson County possesses a unique feature that many have not discovered… caves.

Every morning, Florida Caverns State Park opens its gates to nature lovers from around the world and each visitor's focus is a bit different. Some parents share the cave experience with their children for the first time, while others choose to stroll along trails, observing nature and enjoying the serenity that only the forest can provide. Lasting experiences and wonderful memories created at Florida Caverns are all part of the park's foundation.

For generations, our ancestors have benefited from the land we now know as Florida Caverns State Park. During the Great Depression, many members of the Civilian Conservation Corps called this land home, working diligently on roads, trails and buildings. The Chipola River, which runs through the park, received its name from Native Americans who first inhabited the area.

The name Chipola means "sweet water," the joy of which can be used year round. Visitors often remain on the water under the beauty of the oaks, surrounded by silence.

Florida Caverns, as well as the other 160 Florida State Parks, will celebrate July as Recreation and Parks Month. Florida State Parks are reconnecting children and nature with the Family. Friends. Fun. campaign by hosting events in state parks that appeal to individuals and families of all ages and interests this July during Recreation and Parks Month.

On Sunday, July 13, entry into all 161 state parks will be free, providing an opportunity for everyone to head outdoors and experience Florida State Parks.

Florida Caverns State Park would like to extend a personal invitation to everyone to come join the celebration.

The park opens at 8:00 a.m. and remains open until sunset every day.

For more information about Recreation and Parks Month or Florida Caverns State Park, contact the park's ranger station at (850) 482- 1228.
