Evenings in Olde Seville swing into summer with 2009 concert series
|
An Evenings tradition, the first concert of the season kicks off with the popular McGuire's Irish Pipe Band marching into Olde Seville Square at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 21. Pianist Bobby Van Deusen follows with his repertoire of stride and ragtime classics, and the Pensacola Civic Band with Antonio Guiliano round out the night with sophisticated patriotic selections.
The concert season continues May 28 with John Wooton & KAISO! Caribbean Band, famous for their steel drums and native instruments. The band will delight the crowd with a variety of styles including calypso, soca, jazz, salsa, samba, reggae and funk to get the crowd feelin' the rhythms.
Tim Jackson's MR. BIG takes the stage June 4 with his special fusion of New Orleans Jazz, American pop, beach music and country.
Four new bands grace the gazebo this year including the accordian-driven Zydeco Zoo on July 16, variety band Mass Kunfuzion on Aug. 6 and the finger-snappin' Fiesta Barbershop Chorus followed by bluegrass group Delta Reign on Aug. 13. Returning for another season of music in the park are crowd favorites the Reunion Band with Palafox Horns on July 2 and Clark & Company Aug. 20.
Since 1988, these musicfilled evenings have become a "new" tradition, recreating the popular concerts held in the city's park at the turn of the 19th century. The Pensacola Heritage Foundation has preserved some of Pensacola's most treasured historic sites, including Seville Square, by promoting historic preservation through adaptive use. The Pensacola Heritage Foundation promotes city and community awareness and pride through events such as "Evenings in Old Seville Square."
