IMAX® and simulator rides add 'edge' to museum experience
"Straight Up" Renown for its amazing collection of antique, historic and one-of-a-kind planes and aviation history displays, the National Naval Aviation Museum also adds a lot of energy and some high-tech fun to its offerings.
Between the IMAX® theater and the Flight Simulators, you can truly experience flight!
The Museum has two types of simulators; the Motion-Based Simulator located on the Second Deck and the Top Gun Air Combat Simulator located on the Main Deck in the South Wing.
Motion-Based Simulator
not for the faint at heart
The Motion-Based Simulator is a five-minute, multisensory experience that combines a movie-like audiovisual presentation using a highdefinition projection screen and surround-sound, with the motion of the ride compartment. The fully enclosed simulator capsule, which accommodates up to 15 passengers, can move in six directions, allowing you to experience horizontal rolls, longitudinal pitches and vertical climbs.
There are two different rides you may choose from in our Flight Simulator. In the Blue Angel Simulation, riders experience flight in a Navy F/A-18 Hornet on a low-level mission, including high-performance turns and maneuvers. Or you can take off from an aircraft carrier and do battle in the Iraqi desert in the Desert Storm Simulation.
Rides start every six to seven minutes and run continuously from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. See the pricing page for individual and group rates. Look for discounts on combo packages that include IMAX® movies and simulator rides. Passengers must be three years or older to ride the Motion-Based Simulator.
Top Gun Air Combat
Simulators
Experience the thrill of flight in the Top Gun Air Combat Simulators. Test your flying skills inside the cockpit of a Navy F-14 Tomcat. After a pre-flight briefing, you will climb in, close the canopy and take off. Land on an aircraft carrier, engage in a dogfight and much more!
These four simulators, located off the Blue Angel Atrium, are the real deal. They were used to train more than 1,000 F-14 pilots during the 30-year length of service of the Tomcat. The simulators are painted in the livery of VF-84, "Jolly Rogers", a squadron that has been a constant presence in the U.S. Navy since January 1943.
The ride costs $25 for one or two people and includes a pre-flight briefing and 20 thrilling minutes at the controls. The simulators are twoseaters with the pilot in the front seat and the radar intercept officer in the back seat. Only children more than 10 years of age may participate and must sit in the back. Gift certificates are available and Top Gun can also be reserved by the hour for private use (birthdays, special events, etc.). For information or to reserve your flight, call Top Gun at (850) 453-2389, extension 3276.
Current IMAX® Films
Four movies are currently showing in the theater. Teacher's Guides are available for each, and field trips and large groups are accommodated.
At Red Flag, the international training exercise for air forces of allied countries, many of the world's best pilots meet for the most challenging flying of their careers. Red Flag is the final training for pilots and their aircrews before being sent into actual combat. We follow John Stratton as he makes his way through this extraordinary event held in the deserts of Nevada. He is amazed at how complex, challenging and dangerous the exercises are. Narrated by Captain John "Otter" Stratton.
Travel deep into the Grand Canyon on a thrilling expedition down the mighty Colorado River. Combining the grandeur of the Grand Canyon with family fun, this film tells an engaging story of how ordinary people can make a difference for our parched planet. As the expedition journeys down river, audiences will learn about the challenges we face and the many opportunities that exist for conserving and restoring our watersheds. Fly with the Blue Angels and experience the thrill of cruising the skies at Mach speed. From the dawn of manned flight to the modern space shuttle, this film has it all. Film is narrated by Tom Selleck.
"Straight Up! Helicopters in Action" features more than a dozen helicopters in a series of pulse-pounding adventures that demonstrate the many roles that these powerful aircraft play in our lives. Fly along with skilled helicopter crews as they carry out sea and mountain rescues, apprehend drug smugglers, repair high-voltage lines, save endangered animals, deliver humanitarian aid and undertake a military reconnaissance mission. Narrated by actor Martin Sheen and directed by David Douglas.
