Every year, as December comes to an end, we begin brainstorming ideas for the new year.

How can I improve myself? How can I have more fun? How can I live more comfortably?

These are some of the questions we often ask.

There is, however, another question we can ask. A question for which I present 10 answers.

How can I experience the Gulf Coast in a new or exciting way?

1. From the air: There may not be a better way to appreciate the aesthetic beauty of the Gulf Coast than from the air. Imagine parasailing 100 feet above the Gulf of Mexico. The sun shines on clear emerald water, creating the effect of diamonds dancing on the surface. Then the pure white sand grabs your attention, until the warm air embraces you as it passes by. You won’t want to come down.

2. Underwater: After descending from the air, dive into the emerald green water and a new world altogether. Whether snorkeling or scuba diving, this area has some great underwater destinations. From the underwater wrecks near Pensacola to the limestone reefs near Destin, one is sure to find their underwater treasure.

3. With a paddle: While in the water, you might as well explore the rivers, bays and even the Gulf in a canoe or kayak. This areas is home to a plethora of winding rivers and bay systems. Getting out in a kayak allows one to enjoy solitude and freedom, as well as beautiful landscapes and exciting wildlife.

4. Through history: This area has a rich cultural history that has been influenced by European settlers, Native Americans before them, and the millions that move to or visit the area annually. So, explore the historical districts and museums in the area to learn a little more about the Emerald Coast than the best place to get a tan.

5. Through conservation: The natural beauty of the area is apparent, and there’s plenty to be gained from helping keep it that way. Team up with local organizations and individuals to help keep this area beautiful. You’ll have a much deeper appreciation for the sun, sand and sea if you participate in conservation.

6. With a fork: After all of the flying, swimming, paddling and cleaning, I bet you’ll be a little hungry. Dig a little deeper than the dining options listed in hotel brochures and you’ll find some eateries that may be a little smaller in operation, but certainly not in quality or service. From seafood to barbeque and Cajun to Mediterranean, this area offers some of the best food one will find anywhere.

7. In the audience: After dinner, a good show is in order. This area has certainly inspired visual artists with its pristine landscapes, but there is also a very strong appreciation for performing arts. Catch a local production at the Pensacola Little Theatre or a traveling show at the Saenger. The Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra and Pensacola Opera will also delight your taste for stage entertainment.

8. Behind a mask: While we’re on the subject of arts, I should also inform you that the area is home to a seemingly endless calendar of festivals and gatherings. The area overflows with activity when the Blue Angels fly in July, and the streets spill over for Mardi Gras in February. I would be willing to say that on any given weekend along the Gulf Coast, one can find an outdoor festival or celebration of some kind .

9. In the dark: Restaurants, theatres and bars aren’t the only ways to enjoy the Gulf Coast nightlife. There is plenty of fun to be had while just out walking around in the dark. Take a moonlight stroll through the National Seashore near Fort Pickens on a ranger-led tour. Join the Escambia Amature Astronomers for one of their stargazing outings on Pensacola Beach. Or, just simply take a blanket out to the beach and watch the moonlight dance on the water and try to stay awake as the tranquill waves repeat their endless lapping.

10. Through a lens: Finally, I would suggest that you document everything the area has to offer. Take a camera, video or photographic, with you and take photos or video of anything and everything you find interesting. It could be a heron fishing for lunch, a crazy dance at an outdoor festival, or a serene coastal landscape. It’s up to you.
