The Art Books of Henri Matisse
This exhibition features original illustrations and text by one of the preeminent French artists of the twentieth century. Best known for his boldly colored paintings, Matisse was in his 60s and a renowned artist when he began to make books.
He regarded the prints he created for books as an extension of drawing. The drawing. The same flowing lines that characterized so many of his paintings carried over to the printmaking medium and related illustrations. Matisse eventually illustrated 12 books; each issued in a limited edition and signed by the artist.
The exhibition includes text and original illustrations from four of Matisse's most artistically significant books.
This exhibition is made available to the Pensacola Museum of Art as part of the Bank of America Art Exhibition Program. It runs through June 26.
From Private Walls: Pensacola
Collects
PMA presents an exhibition of notable works from private art collections in the Pensacola area. The works, by artists of national and international acclaim, showcase the significant and engaging artwork that lies in private homes and offices, presenting a unique opportunity to view the holdings of local collectors.
“From Private Walls: Pensacola Collects” will be on display to the public through April 18.
To continue its focus on local "treasures", the Museum will host Cash in the Attic, an Antiques Road Show-style appraisal weekend featuring celebrity appraiser Tim Luke from HGTV's hit show of the same name. In addition to his television and radio presence, Mr. Luke was a former Vice President with Sotheby's. Rescheduled for October 2010, the event will offer the opportunity to identify the value of family heirlooms, art, antiques and collectibles. Items will be appraised for a ticketed admission with proceeds benefitting the Museum's exhibitions and programming.
