FDM has distinctive Sound following

“Every song has its own personality. We have some with techier parts, tinges of blackness and slam in others.”

On Wednesday Sept. 20, we had a chance to sit down with a very different type of Florida band. Most of the population is unaware of the unique sound that is Florida Death Metal, but be certain, there is a very real following for the sound.

Accursed Creator consists of Chelsea Strickland on vocals, Derrick Javier on guitar, Taylor Tidwell on guitar, Nate Flores on drums and E. on bass. The band is influenced by other bands such as The Black Dahlia Murder, Behemoth, Deeds of Flesh, Cannibal Corpse, Cattle Decapitation, Between the Buried and Me.

How would you describe your sound?

Chelsea: “Every song has its own personality. We have some with techier parts, tinges of blackness and slam in others. We kind of leave it up to the people on labeling our sound. But for the most part, we’ve been umbrellaed under “death metal.” With that being said, we are happy to represent Florida Death Metal, over all.”

What is your instrument of choice, and how long have you played?

Derrick: “I play guitar, and I’ve been playing for two decades.”

Chelsea: I do vocals, I’ve been singing screaming for a couple of years now.”

Taylor: “I play guitar, and I’ve been playing for nine years.”

E.: “I play bass, and I honestly can’t remember how long I’ve been playing.”

Nate: “I play drums, and I’ve been playing for about 12 years.”

What made you decide to start a band?

Chelsea: “It just happened. Things happened. Line-ups changed, we just wanted to write. It was fun.”

Derrick: “For me, I’ve always kind of just been in a band. It’s always been what I’ve done, ever since I started playing guitar.”

Taylor: “I just love music, so that’s why.”

E.: “Because they asked me to.”

Nate: “Also, because they asked me to.”

Chelsea: “They agreed! Which is also great. Thank you for being here.”

Why did you choose metal as your music style?

Chelsea: “I think for me, personally, metal expressed my style more than other music could. I’m very quiet on the outside, and internally I feel more passionate and intense. Metal just kind of portrayed that a little bit more for me. I’ve always loved metal, since I was a kid. It’s always been something that has caught my ears.”

Derick: “I have about the same response. Metal was the one thing that really spoke to me and stuck with me throughout the years. I’ve studied all kinds of music throughout the years, and metal is the one that I just stayed with. I also really love the community. It’s super close, and everybody is like brothers and sisters here, so it’s been very cool.”

Taylor: “The raw power of it. The ferocity, the energy, the feeling it gives you when you listen to it, when you play it. It’s the best.”

E.: “Because it’s very hard to find a Japanese rock band around here.”

Nate: “I’ve always loved the high intensity. It just seems like the most technical and proficient musicianship that you can find on that extreme level.”

What is your fiveyear plan?

Chelsea: “We hope that we are still a band. I want to be touring and doing festival’s honestly. I think everybody kind of feels that way. I hope.”

Nate: “I just want to make music.”

E.: “I just want to play bass. I don’t care about that Rockstar stuff.”

If there was one musician of band you could tour with, (alive or dead) who would it be?

Chelsea: “Personally, it would be Cattle Decapitation.” Taylor: “Pantera.”

E.: “Dorian Grey.”

Nate: “Single musician -- Derick Roddy. The man is king. Band-Deeds of Flesh. (I really want to audition for you!)”

Derrick: “I’d love to tour with the Black Dahlia Murder.”

Accursed Creator has two upcoming shows, on Nov. 2 at the Vinyl Music Hall opening for Soulfly, and on Nov. 2 in Nashville with Abyss Walker and Obelisk.
