35th Annual Pensacola JazzFest April 7-8 Seville Square in Downtown Pensacola

All Jazzed Up

Love jazz? Love great food, the work of regional artisans, the great outdoors and lots of free fun?

You’ll find it all at the 35th annual Pensacola JazzFest April 7-8 in Seville Square in downtown Pensacola.

Headliners this year include Scott Wilson Quintet, Paula Atherton, Michael Pellera, Gene Bertoncini, the 4 Korners, Patrick Frost and Andy Martin.

There will be magic under the majestic live oaks in the midst of historical surroundings downtown, and it’s free.

The festival celebrates the uniquely American musical art form known as Jazz with local standouts and worldrenowned acts.

The fun actually begins Friday, April 6, in the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium at Pensacola State College at 1000 College Blvd. Trombonist Andy Martin will be rehearsing with an all-star collegiate band made up of young musicians from PSC, University of West Florida, Northwest Florida State College and Coastal Alabama Community College.

Show up and enjoy sessions for free.

The next morning’s musical line-up begins at 10 a.m. at Seville Square, the main site of JazzFest. The selection of middle, high school and college bands is on tap for the Saturday kick-off.

At 1 p.m., guitarist Gene Bertoncini and his trio will take the stage. Andy Martin will be with the collegiate band Saturday and then, on Sunday, will show up with Don Snowden’s Big Band.

Is jazz piano your thing?

New Orleans/New York resident Michael Pellera is your go-to show then. He will perform with his trio throughout the course of the weekend, as will a host of other great jazz musicians.

Girls get in on the fun, too, when New Yorker Paula Atherton displays her skills with saxophone and vocals.

The Scott Wilson Quintet is sure to appeal to the straight-ahead or Brazilian jazz lovers and Patrick Frost will bring his mixture of “Island Jazz” with steel pans, conch shells, trombones and keys to add to the mix.

The 4 Korners, a jazz fusion band, is set to close things out both days.

Kids Jazz Jam will be available both Saturday and Sunday and JazzFest merchandise, including posters and T-shirts with 35th anniversary art by DeFuniak Springs artist Carol Ferony, will be available.

Sign up to become a new member of Jazz Pensacola and get a free Jazzfest poster, while they last.
