JUNIOR IRON CHEF COMPETITION FIRES UP

The Junior League of Pensacola invites the community to attend Junior Iron Chef, a healthy kids’ cooking competition hosted in partnership with Ever’man Cooperative Grocery & Café and offered free to the public at Ever’man Educational Center at 350 West Garden St. in Pensacola April 29 from 1-3:30 p.m.

Sixteen children, ages 7-12, have been selected to participate in the competition. Participants are from the monthly after-school Kids in the Kitchen program hosted by the Junior League of Pensacola.

They have an hour to cook a healthy meal, as well as develop a menu and a grocery list and go shopping at Ever’man, using the nutritional and cooking knowledge from their year in the Kids in the Kitchen program.

Healthy snacks and interactive activities are planned for families with young children who come to watch the competition and cheer on these budding culinary masters.

Each month, Kids in the Kitchen provides around 60 children from 4 to 12 years old lessons and demonstrations in preparing healthy meals and snacks that are both tasty and affordable. These opportunities also encourage children to exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.

The curriculum, developed by Junior League member Erin Adams, complements the 5210 Northwest Florida campaign and communitybased nutrition program and includes inspiration from other Junior League programs.

Kids in the Kitchen always includes a healthy living lesson and an interactive activity, game or craft before a hands-on cooking demonstration that ties it all together. The program serves children in Pensacola communities who are at higher risk for childhood obesity and who, statistically, lack adequate access to healthier food options.

This competition is the culmination of a year’s worth of work, oneon one, with these participants. Local celebrity chefs and awardwinning restaurateurs will be on hand to mentor the children and youths; however, the young people are running the show—not the chefs. The celebrity judges will name one team as the competition winner, as well as announce other awards and prizes for outstanding dishes.
